“Good things come to those who wait,” so says the old English saying. And for those of us who adore the world of Harris, whether since the publication of Red Dragon, the cinematic achievement of Silence, or just recently here with Hannibal, last night’s Season 1 finale was sheer perfection.
The final dance of Hannibal Season 1 has begun. Will has begun to find himself once more, Jack is on the verge of securing an arrest warrant, and Hannibal is literally pacing the floor.
First the good news: Hannibal has been renewed for a second season. “Fannibals” were atwitter last evening as NBC made the announcement shortly before the broadcast, adding to the already heightened anticipation of what promised to be Season 1’s most unnerving episode yet.
The Prestige wrapped in slick Italian Job styling, Now You See Me offers a caper flick wrapped in glitzy magical effects that quite literally challenges us to keep up. Whether you enjoy trying to figure out how it’s done, or simply prefer to bask in its glorious effect - as long as the trick intrigues you, you’re in for a treat.
Things are getting dicey. The latest case has pushed Will seriously past his limits, and now Abigail Hobbs has decided to do a tell-all under the gentle ministrations of Freddie Lounds. The internal churn, hallmark of the Harris world, has begun.
Okay, boys and girls, the day we’ve been waiting for (and dreading) is upon us: we’re starting to witness Hannibal Lecter in actual operation, and as one might expect, it’s truly chilling. Hannibal the series is officially a dream come true for Thomas Harris fans, and Mads Mikkelsen has officially staked his place as my favorite Hannibal the man.
Hannibal is beginning to show us the glorious and daunting spectrum of human love, frailty, and depravity... and Will Graham’s starting to lose it just a smidge.
Where last week we had a straight case to solve, in this week's Hannibal we get to enjoy the interplay between our principals and delve into the Minnesota Shrike arc in detail…
Amuse-Bouche: A bite-sized hors d’oeuvre offered for free at the beginning of a meal. You can’t buy it, like an appetizer; it’s bestowed at chef’s discretion and selection, to prepare the guest for the meal and to offer a glimpse into the chef’s approach to the art of cuisine. Yum. You like mushrooms?
With this fresh and gorgeous reboot, Thomas Harris fans are graced, at long last, with a proper portrait of perhaps literature’s greatest detective, FBI agent Will Graham. Maybe. But either way, Hannibal is promising to be mighty delicious. Mads Mikkelsen will see to that.
